The historical segments of the game follow the adventures of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the series’ main protagonist, as he seeks to uncover the secrets of the enigmatic Altair Ibn-La’Ahad, the original Assassin from the first Assassin’s Creed game. The game is set primarily in the 16th-century city of Constantinople (now Istanbul) during the height of the Ottoman Empire. It was released in 2011 as a direct sequel to Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and continues the story of the protagonist, Desmond Miles, as he explores his ancestral memories using a device called the Animus.
